Ductless heat pumps are popular in Portland Oregon because they offer heating and cooling in one energy efficient unit so you save money and energy.
Whether you have 1 room or multiple rooms that need heating and cooling, ductless systems are the answer to providing comfort without spending a fortune.
While a standard heat pump needs ductwork, the ductless heat pump (also called mini-splits or ductless systems) needs no ductwork, which is how it got its name. Because it needs no ductwork, installation is easier and faster than a standard heat pump.
In fact, it’s perfect for new additions, garage conversions, attics, basements or any place where there’s no ductwork. They are also great for that one room that’s always too hot because the sun shines directly into the window.
Mini-splits are versatile as they can be used for 1 room or multiple rooms. Ductless systems have an outside unit that can be paired with just 1 indoor unit or multiple units so you can install it to work with whatever number of rooms you need.
If you currently have hot water heat or radiators as your heating system, then you don’t have ductwork so this would be a terrific option for you.

A ductless heat pump consists of 2 units (outside and inside unit) which are connected by a small conduit that houses the refrigerant and other electrical components.
The conduit is small so only a 3” hole is needed in the wall of your home to connect the 2 units.
Multiple indoor units can be connected to the outdoor unit and the number that can be connected (to the outside unit) depends on the make, model and manufacturer of the system.
With multiple indoor units, you can cool or heat your entire home or just specific areas as each inside unit has its own controls.
This means a room can be turned off when it’s not needed, which is one of the reasons they are so energy efficient.
